Plane carrying 152 crashes in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD – A passenger jet carrying 152 people crashed into the hills surrounding Pakistan's capital amid rain Wednesday, officials said. At least five people were killed and five wounded, but many more were feared dead. The cause of the Airblue crash was not immediately clear, said Pervez George, a civil aviation official. He said the plane had left the southern city of Karachi at 7:45 a.m. for a two-hour scheduled flight to Islamabad and was trying to land during difficult weather.

Airblue is a private service based in Karachi, Pakistan's largest city. "The plane was about to land at the Islamabad airport when it lost contact with the control tower, and later we learned that the plane had crashed," George said, adding that the model of the plane was Airbus 321 and the flight number was ED202. Guards with the forestry service said they had found some wreckage and seen at least five dead bodies, said Imtiaz Inayat Ali, an official with Islamabad's Capital Development Authority. Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik said at least five wounded passengers had been rescued.

Pakistani news channels showed what appeared to be wreckage of the plane as a helicopter hovered above the heavily forested hills to assess the situation. Fire was visible and smoke was blowing up from the scene. The army said it was sending special troops to the area to help out along with helicopters. At the Islamabad airport, hundreds of friends and relatives of those on board the flight swarmed ticket counters desperately seeking information. A large cluster of people also surrounded the list of passengers on the flight, which was posted near the Airblue ticket counter. "Nobody is guiding anyone. People are running from one counter to another," said Arshad Mahmood, whose brother, Maulana Nawab Ulhasan, a prayer leader in a town near Islamabad, was on the flight. "I'm praying for his survival, but I think there is little hope," Mahmood said.

Arshad Ali said his cousin, Raza Ali, was supposed to be on the flight but missed it in Karachi on his way from Canada. "We are happy he missed the flight, but things here are in shambles at the airport," Ali said. "For God's sake, take care of the worried people, the relatives of those who were on the unfortunate plane. They have no information and are just running here and there." Saqlain Altaf told Pakistan's ARY news channel that he was on a family outing in the hills when he saw the plane looking unsteady in the air. "The plane had lost balance, and then we saw it going down," he said, adding that he heard the crash. Officials at first thought it was a small plane, but later revised that. George said 146 passengers were on the flight along with six crew members.

Raheel Ahmed, a spokesman for the airline, said an investigation would be launched, but that for now the focus was to find survivors. The plane was no more than eight years old, and it had no known technical issues, Ahmed said. He added that to his knowledge, the pilots had not sent any emergency signals. Airblue flies within Pakistan as well as internationally to the United Arab Emirates, Oman and the United Kingdom. The only previous recorded accident for Airblue, a carrier that began flying in 2004, was a tailstrike in May 2008 at Quetta airport by one of the airline's Airbus 321 jets. There were no casualties and damage was minimal, according to the U.S.-based Aviation Safety Network. The Airbus 320 family of medium-range jets, which includes the 321 model that crashed Wednesday, is one of the most popular in the world, with about 4,000 jets delivered since deliveries began in 1988. Twenty-one of the aircraft have been lost in accidents since then, according to the Aviation Safety Network's database. The deadliest was a 2007 crash at landing in Sao Paolo by Brazil's TAM airline, in which all 187 people on board perished, along with 12 others on the ground.

The last major plane crash in Pakistan was in July 2006 when a Fokker F-27 twin-engine aircraft operated by Pakistan International Airlines slammed into a wheat field on the outskirts of the central Pakistani city of Multan, killing all 45 people on board. In August 1989, another PIA Fokker, with 54 people onboard, went down in northern Pakistan on a domestic flight. The plane's wreckage was never found. In September 1992, a PIA Airbus A300 crashed into a mountain in Nepal, killing all 167 people on board. Mass Brief : Navigation & Instruments Flying (IF)

Batch 24 had their mass briefing for Navigation and Instruments Flying on 14/7/2010. The briefing was conducted by Capt Shafiq Izzad Radzi. We started our briefing around 11.40AM and finished around 1.30PM.



Basically, we were briefed about Navigation exercise which is one of the vital exercise among other exercises. Reason is, we are no longer operating in Bachok or Uban training area, but the route for navigation is outside the training area. Few points for cadet pilots must look very carefully before flight. Such as, weather forecast, NOTAMs, safety height, local/area QNH settings boundary and map preparations.



Quite a few points need to remember for this exercise such as TTRT, CLEAROFF and TTRRR.



For some reasons, if the cadet lost or doesnt know where is his exact position, few steps need to be taken such as ground to map technique. If this does not solve, then we need assistance from the ATC as the final solution. And of course, dont make it as  a habit =p.

INSTRUMENTS FLYING




All this while, we are flying using VFR which stands for Visual Flight Rules. Now we are one step ahead for IFR. Instruments Flight Rules.  In this exercise, we need to wear the "IF" hood to ensure that we can only see instruments to simulate that we are flying inside clouds.  So this will develop our trust on instruments itself =).

I have two exercises waiting to be complete. Second SOLO (CCT) and General Handling 2 (SOLO CHECK Training Area)..However, sortie for batch 24 especially with Capt Nay has been reduced from 4 to 2 sortie perday.  Moreover, Capt Naing and Capt Myo have their Eagle 150B rating and they started to fly with eagle already.

I'm going to hangar tomorrow to check whether I can "slot" in my solo check or not =p.

Goodbye and goodluck my bestfriend.

Goodbye bro, Naim (Paka) from Batch 23 and his brother, Nazirul leaving to Terengganu by today.. It's very nice to all both of you all this while. Almost 1 year we were together, helped each other in major exams (PPL/DCAT/CA6/CA2) and went out together.

AirAsia guna sistem tempahan baru mulai Ahad



SYARIKAT penerbangan tambang murah, AirAsia Bhd (AirAsia) akan menutup sementara sistem penempahan semasanya selama tiga hari mulai jam 1 tengah hari esok untuk digantikan dengan sistem baru yang boleh menampung pertumbuhan semasa syarikat itu. Ketua Serantau Komersil AirAsia, Kathleen Tan (gambar), berkata sebagai sebahagian daripada proses pelaksanaan sistem itu, perkhidmatan penempatan AirAsia akan dihentikan sementara dari jam 1 tengah hari esok hingga jam 6 petang, 11 Julai. “Pelanggan digalak membuat tempahan beberapa hari sebelum Jumaat untuk mengelak kekecewaan kerana sistem baru itu hanya boleh digunakan mulai jam 6 petang, 11 Julai,” katanya.

Beliau berkata, sepanjang tempoh tiga hari penutupan sistem berkenaan, pelanggan tidak boleh melakukan tempahan tempat duduk secara dalam talian di pejabat jualan AirAsia dan kaunter atau melalui pusat panggilan. “Pendaftaran masuk melalui web, telefon mudah alih dan kios serta kemudahan penempahan urus sendiri juga tidak dapat dilakukan selama tiga hari. “Kami hanya menerima tunai bagi pembelian sebarang produk tambahan di kaunter daftar masuk termasuk bayaran lebihan bagasi,” katanya. Menurutnya, pelanggan dinasihatkan mendaftar masuk sekurang-kurangnya tiga jam sebelum berlepas bagi mengelak terlepas penerbangan kerana pendaftaran masuk akan dilakukan secara manual di kaunter daftar masuk di lapangan terbang.

Bagaimanapun, katanya penempahan hotel dan pengembaraan serta aktiviti pada airasiago.com akan terus diadakan sepanjang tempoh pelaksanaan usaha menaik taraf sistem itu. Menurutnya, sistem sedia ada itu ditukarkan kerana ia tidak dapat menampung pertumbuhan semasa AirAsia. “Sistem digunakan kini sudah berusia 20 tahun dan tidak lagi dapat menampung pertumbuhan semasa kami serta dapat menampung sehingga setengah juta sehari. “Dengan pemasangan sistem baru itu, ia berupaya menerima tempahan sehingga sejuta penerbangan sehari,” katanya di Kuala Lumpur, se malam.

Menurutnya lagi, AirAsia membelanjakan kira-kira RM10 juta bagi tahun pertama untuk operasi sistem baru itu. Tan berkata, syarikat penerbangan itu melakukan banyak pelaburan teknologi untuk menyokong pengembangannya di pasaran, kebanyakannya di Asia, Australia dan Eropah. “Bagi tahun ini, syarikat memperuntukkan kira-kira RM80 juta hingga RM100 juta kepada jabatan teknologi maklumatnya (IT),” katanya.

Flying Logbook

As per my conversation above with my batch leader, I went to Hangar around 7.30AM to meet up with CFI, Capt Mokhy . Weather reported is enough to make SOLO flyers disappointed..Haha~





So as usual lah~ no need for me to mention so many times, I love to take photos while waiting for my turn to fly, but... this time , waiting for the CFI  =p

Due to weather, Runway 28 was used in this morning.

Weather was quite good during the afternoon. But still, under IMC.







Din and I went for a quick lunch at a stall just around the corner from APFT hangar, while waiting for the CFI to come actually =p





I continued my journey to the aircraft after had my lunch ...





Around 2PM CFI arrived safely at APFT hangar, I went to see him and asked about the logbook. He said, the whole batch filled wrongly the flying hours.Huhu, so, he put me in charge to fix and let everyone know about it.

General Handling 1 & 4

After a "sweet" one week of leave, I'm back on track. =p The next exercise was General Handling 1, or in short, GH1. A few information about this exercise will be explain. In this exercise, the cadet will be tested again for the basic handling of the aircraft which includes Climb and Descent and Medium Turn. After revised, cadet will be demo for the steep turn. In steep turn, we have to bank the aircraft either right or left with 45'degress of Angle of Bank and a little back pressure just to maintain the Altitude. In this exercise, you can feel the "G-Force" quite well. Steep turn is required to be done prior to Stall exercise by making 360' degrees of heading change. Unlike Medium Turn, its only 180'degrees of heading change. So, do not confuse here folks!.

Another demonstration was, Practice Forced Landing (PFL) in training area as well as overhead airfield. What I can say, we practiced until 200Feet which I can see coconut trees big enough to make me scared. ==, remember, Capt Nay demo to me. I just followed through =p

He did show me how to select the most suitable areas by considering the size,shape,slope,surrounding and slope. Not to forget, wind components we have into take into account as well.

So we did 1 touch and go after the PFL at overhead airfield.



Went back home after de-briefing session.
